Savoy Hotel and Restaurant Wine List
Hotel Savoy, 1894.
Printed card wrappers, string ties. "Salle a Manger" noted in black ink at the top of the upper cover. Extensive wine list and cigar selection. The inner cover contains a classification chart for the wines of the Gironde, whilst the rear offers particulars of the vintages. Illustration to the rear cover. Some dustiness to the covers, else excellent. Occasional annotations and additions, particularly to the champagne section.
This list from the time when Cesar Ritz was general manager of the Savoy and Escoffier in charge of the restaurant.
An interesting reflection on the comparative values at the time. Cantenac Brown, Leoville Lascases and Lafite from 1875 are all listed at about the same price. The inside back cover gives a summary of the Champagne and Claret vintages from 1858 to 1891 with candid comments regarding quality. 1873 vintage champagne is described as "Bad; acid, and notwithstanding that, dear" while the 1875 claret is, "One of the largest and finest vintages on record; good colour, soft, and ripe, an elegant wine".
