First edition, Edition de Luxe. Number 211 of 500 copies, signed by the publishers. Large 4to. Original publisher's white buckram, decorated in red and green, with gilt titles and embellishments. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Green silk page marker present. An extra etching precedes the frontispiece, not present in other editions. Seventy-three colour plates under captioned tissue guards. Twenty full page black and white illustrations and numerous smaller illustrations throughout the text. A very handsome volume, in near fine condition, just slight foxing to some tissue guards and one with tiny loss.
This sumptuous production details the life and work of landscape painter, Myles Birket Foster, described by the Times as "certainly the most popular water-colour artist of our time." Paintings reproduced range from familiar British scenes to those from the artist's travels to the Continent, where he had a particular love of Venice.
