Scottish born Pettie (1839-1893) excelled at painting heroic scenes from Scotland's history. His palette utilised a rich resonance of colour, and his art was known for its dash and vigour, the pictorial qualities taking precedence over the storytelling which had been the immediate concern of his predecessors. Prolific and industrious, he became one of the best known British artists of his day.
