A.L.S. TO 'MAIME'
Autograph Letter Signed
1940.
Autograph letter signed by King, from Jessie M. King to her long term companion and housekeeper/nanny, Mary McNab written in black ink on two sides of a small sheet of letter paper 17.5 x 11cm. Together with the original postal envelope. The letter discusses a proposed trip, a secret which Jessie had grudgingly agreed to keep, "I could punch Dora's head with the greatest satisfaction... Preserve us from the Godly, they are all hypocrites," and is signed "Lots of Love from Jake." In very good condition, some light wear, especially to the envelope, but generally clean.
The relationship between Mary NcNab, nicknamed Maime, and Jessie King was an incredibly close one. This chatty, gossipy letter shows the closeness of their relationship and gives a insight into the light-hearted side of Jessie's personality with those she knew and trusted. Jessie knew Maime from her childhood in the Manse and Maime accompanied Jessie for much of her life, as a housekeeper, nanny, a friend and confidante, in their homes in Salford, Paris, and eventually, Kirkcudbright. Maime died in 1939 and seven years Jessie's ashes would be scattered over her grave.
