Alex Gardner, Paisley, 1902.
First edition. 8vo. Green buckram with stylised gilt titles and vignettes designed by Jessie M King. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Inscribed on the front endpaper, "Dr Hutchison Stirling with kindest regards from J.C.S. Mitchell, Killearn Manse, Jan 24th 1903." Illustrated title page, frontispiece and three full page line drawings. Illustrations are in King's distinctive style with stylised knights and maidens and are all intricate line drawings. A very good copy indeed of this elusive early King book.
This was King's first commission by a British publisher. Prior to the publication of this volume King had designed book covers and it was her success at the 1902 Turin exhibition prompted this commission.
Mitchell''s translations of the Latin dramas of George Buchanan gained him an honorary degree of D.D. from St Andrews University. The gift inscription in this volume comes from Killearn Manse, where Mitchell was the minister. Jessie King was born in the Manse of the neighbouring parish New Kilpatrick, where her father was the Church of Scotland Minister.
