From The Enchanted Capital of Scotland
Original Artwork : Mcnab's Garden From The Enchanted Capital of Scotland
1945.
Original ink and water colour on vellum. 31.5cm x 40cm Signed in ink to lower righthand corner. The painting is reproduced as a double page spread on pages 12-13 of Jessie M. King's final book. King's trademark images including a rabbit, thistles and stylised flowers. In fine condition, clean and undfaded.
A joyful scene, this original painting is full of vibrant splashes of colour, though the colours are far more muted than their slightly garish reproductions in the book.
The book describes a trip packed with discoveries, as a party of school children pay a visit to Edinburgh. The story bears the subtitle, "A Tale of Mystery and Adventure. From a story told by a Merchant of Edinburgh" and the title page notes those involved in the books creation, "Retold in words by Isobel K. Steele; Retold in Pictures by Jessie M. King; Noel Fyfe, the merchant."
Describing the book biographer, Colin White, notes, "Jessie made the whole book one extended design with drawings weaving in and out of the text... She filled each page with flowers, butterflies, elves, children and the architectural marvels of the city"
PROVENANCE: From the collection of Noel Fyfe, listed in the book as "the Merchant".
