Translated from Old French by Sebastian Evans.
The High History of the Holy Graal Translated from Old French by Sebastian Evans.
Dent, 1903.
First edition. 8vo. Pale blue pictorial cloth, decoration in black and gilt. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Pictorial title page, frontispiece and twenty two full page illustrations. The illustrations are very detailed line drawings, some in a red decorative border. There are also thirty six ornamental head pieces. A very good copy indeed. The pale blue covers remain bright and clean. A small mark in the centre of the spine and minor wear on the spine ends.
This sumptuously produced book is described by Colin White as "one of Jessie's most important achievements". The elaborate borders are reminiscent of Burne-Jones and William Morris' productions for the Kelmscott press. The paper is of high quality which feels lovely in the hand and the illustrations are fantastical and striking. White describes them as giving the reader "a glimpse of a land and time remote from reality", commenting on how "her work demonstrated the art of book binding and decoration, ornament lettering, and illustration". Her ink drawings convey a sinuous and detailed depiction of knights, damsels, and organic flowering imagery.
