Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross
Hodder & Stoughton, 1915.
First edition. 4to. Yellow cloth with black lettering and designs. In the original dustwrapper, which has a colour plate on the upper panel. Nineteen tipped in colour plates, plus a black and white photograph of Dulac, beneath which is printed his fund raising message. A very good copy indeed of the book, the dustwrapper is soiled and has long tears to the spine, but has kept the book in nice condition.
Stories include: Sindbad the Sailor, Cinderella, Blue Beard, The Real Princess etc. Many of the drawings had been used before in Dulac's gift book, but others are seen here for the first time. This book was conceived during the first world war to raise funds for the French Red Cross. Dulac's message reads, " If any reader of my picture book would like to make a direct contribution to the French Red Cross, I should be very proud to receive it and acknowledge it. France bled of treasure and supplies is giving all she can. Can you not spare something towards this work of mercy and healing among our most gallant Allies?"
