A WAS AN AFGHAN AMEER
Lyrics Pathetic and Humorous From a-Z
Frederick Warne, 1909.
This is the uncommon portfolio form of this pictorial alphabet. The original cloth box measures 34.5 x 27.5cm and has a large pictorial onlay printed in colour. The printed pages are mounted onto green art paper and laid loosely in the book. Comprising the two double page spreads of the pictorial endpapers, title page and 24 colour plates, with each letter of the alphabet represented by a drawing and a limerick, XYZ are combined. A near fine example of this delightful portfolio.
The exact number of copies of this portfolio are not known, Colin White estimated the number of copies to be circa 160, though Anne Hughey's research notes that publisher's estimated that it could be as many as 1000 sets. There is no limitation page to confirm the limitation. This edition used unbound sheets from the trade edition, issued the previous year, and was sold at the price of 10s 7d (as opposed to the trade edition which cost 6s).
