DELUXE ISSUE INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR
The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin
Warne, 1903.
First edition. Deluxe issue in floral cloth with white buckram title labels lettered in gilt to upper cover. All edges gilt. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "For [name partially erased] from Beatrix Potter Christmas 1903". Pictorial endpapers and colour illustrations throughout by the author. A very good copy indeed which is externally bright and crisp with none of the wear which usually afflicts the delicate fabric. Front hinge cracked but sound, otherwise internally fresh and tight. An attractive copy of a book rarely seen in nice condition and even less often inscribed by the author.
The erased name is that of Dorothy Fawkes, a neighbour of Beatrix Potter in Sawrey.
In addition to the standard one shilling editions, Warne published a small number of this deluxe edition, priced at 1/6-. The book is bound in an art fabric supplied by Potter's grandfather who owned a large calico print works in Manchester, Edmund Potter & Co. Beatrix Potter referred to this deluxe edition as, "bound in a flowered lavender chintz, very pretty." (Linder p. 140)
