The Tale of Benjamin Bunny
F. Warne & Co., 1904.
First edition, deluxe issue. 12mo. Blue moiré cloth with gilt stamped decoration and colour onlay to the upper cover. All edges gilt. Pictorial endpapers. This copy, from the library of publisher's daughter, Winifred Warne, is in the uncommon deluxe binding. In 1904 Warne asked Beatrix Potter to provide a design for a deluxe edition of her new book, and a small number were produced in a fine, silk moiré cloth, the page edges gilded and the design to the covers embossed in gilt. These deluxe copies sold at the higher price of 1/6-, rather than the usual 1/- for the standard paper covered copies.
PROVENANCE: Winifred Warne (later Boultbee), then family descent.
