Published in October 1913 Pigling Bland was the last book to be published before the marriage of Beatrix Potter to William Heelis. Beatrix used her knowledge of farming in the telling and drawing of this tale. Pig-wig is based on a black Berkshire piglet which Potter had kept as a pet, sleeping in a basket beside her own bed and being fed from a bottle.
When sending a copy of this book to a friend Potter wrote, "I am taking the opportunity of posting off some copies of my new book which has just come out. I hope you will like it... The portrait of two pigs arm in arm - looking at the sunrise - is not a portrait of me and Mr. Heelis, though it is a view of where we used to walk on Sunday afternoons!"
