First edition, deluxe issue. 12mo. Blue moiré cloth with gilt stamped decoration and colour onlay to the upper cover. All edges gilt. Housed in custom made cloth box, with printed provenance label on the inside cover. Colour frontis and 26 colour plates by the author. A near fine copy, with the most minor rubs to the spine ends and short split to head of front hinge.
This copy, from the library of the publisher's daughter, Winifred Warne, is in the very uncommon deluxe binding. Warne asked Beatrix Potter to provide a design for a deluxe edition of her book, a small number were produced in a fine, silk moiré cloth, the page edges gilded and the design to the covers embossed in gilt. These deluxe copies sold at the higher price of 1/6-, rather than the usual 1/- for the standard paper covered copies.
