Dracula
Constable, 1897.
First edition, first issue, printed on thicker stock with uncut page edges and with no adverts at rear. Original yellow cloth with red lettering. Covers dusty, with browning to the spine but the red lettering clear throughout. The cloth is generally free from wear with just a small snag to the head of the spine. Internally extremely fresh with the hinges tight. Wholly free from any form of cleaning or repair. As genuine a copy as you could wish to see, and by the standards of this book, which is so fragile, in very good condition indeed.
Early printings of Dracula come in various states. Copies with a blank final text leaf and no pages of adverts are considered the earliest as all copies inscribed by Stoker on the day of publication are in this state. Issued slightly later is a printing with the final integral leaf now containing an advert for 'The Shoulder of Shasta', and then in subsequent years issues with a further sixteen page catalogue and later still on thinner paper. Although not noted as such, these are essentially reprints. Fine copies of the later issues do occur in commerce, but nice copies of the first issue are many times rarer. "Easily the most influential supernatural novel ever written and the origin of the entire vampire 'industry'. Although filmed and adapted many times for stage and radio, no performance has yet managed to truly capture the atmosphere and originality of the novel itself." (Wilson - Shadows in the Attic)
