[DE QUINCEY, Thomas]

[DE QUINCEY, Thomas] Klosterheim Or The Masque, by The English Opium Eater

William Blackwood, T. Cadell, 1832.

First edition. 12mo. Contemporary petrol blue morocco style cloth, with paper title label to the spine. Blue silk page marker present. A very good copy indeed, lacking terminal adverts. Some spotting to the preliminaries and bookplate to the front pastedown.

De Quincey's only original novel, a Gothic romance influenced by his early love of the works of Ann Radcliffe. In 1907 his daughter, Emily, wrote "The novels of his youth were of the Mrs Radcliffe order full of mysteries, murders, highwaymen, mysterious people and dark corners."
