First edition. Original blue-green cloth with gilt titles to the spine and covers stamped in blind, without 'London 1844' at the base of the spine, as in some copies. First state of text with "100£" on the engraved title page. Engraved title page and 39 steel engraved plates by H. K. Browne. The cloth is in superb condition, clean and bright with no repair and just minor rubbing to the spine ends. Internally, the frontispiece and engraved titles are noticeably spotted with a paper repair at the joint. Other plates show lesser spotting and the text is very clean. Overall an exceptionally nice example of one of the fragile octavo novels, which is seldom encountered thus.
