First edition. Two volumes. Original publisher's brown cloth lettered in gilt to spine, with blind stamped decorations indicative of Smith's variant binding. Vol I in the first state with page X miss-numbered XVI. A near fine copy, with bright covers and a little fading to the spine. A little abrasion to the rear endpaper of the first volume. Housed in quarter morocco slipcase and chemise.
PROVENANCE: Samuel Williams Meek (1895-1981), a noted collector of Dickens and 19th & 20th century literature, bookplates to front pastedowns; Ruth Hanes Craig, bookplates to rear pastedowns.
