First edition, number 55 of 1000 copies in the Edition de Luxe. Signed by Edmund Dulac. Large 4to. The original publisher's full red/brown crushed morocco binding decorated in gilt. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Thirty colour plates mounted within a printed decorative border and with descriptive letterpress on the tissue guards. All plates fine and with no creasing. A near fine copy of this beautiful book, the soft leather is usually prone to wear and this copy has very slight rubs to the spine ends, but remains uncommonly fresh. A most beguiling production in uncommonly good condition.
Loosely inserted is the notice from The Leicester Galleries announcing the Exhibition of the original watercolours for the book from November 19th until Christmas 1910. Also present is a Hodder and Stoughton leaflet advertising their other "Magnificent Colour Books."
All 1000 copies of this book sold out as soon as they went on sale at the price of two guineas. The publishers advertised the book as "the most beautiful book ever published at a popular price". The illustrations are beautiful with rich colours and Dulac's wonderful dark blue skies and twinkling stars.
