Emma: A Novel. In Three Volumes. By the author of "Pride and Prejudice" &c. &c.
Murray, 1816.
First edition. Three volumes. 12mo, 173x100mm. Bound in contemporary half calf, over marbled boards, showing the faint overprinting with ruling and titles for a ledger book. Complete with all three half titles, the one to volume one being bound at the rear as called for when present. A very good set indeed with wear to the spines and corners and some minor superficial repairs to the spines of volume one and two and the joints of volume three cracking but holding firm. Internally, exceptionally clean and fresh with no tears or chips and just occasional light foxing and a mark to O2r in volume one. Overall a pleasingly authentic set of this popular novel, rarely found with all three half titles in a strictly contemporary binding.
The author's fourth and penultimate book published in an initial print run of 2000 copies shortly before she died.
Contemporary reviews were mixed; one critic commenting "there is no story whatever, and the heroine is not better than other people; but the characters are all so true to life, and the style so piquant, that it does not require the adventitious aids of mystery and adventure".
Rarely encountered with all three half titles.
