The Old Nursery Rhymes
Mother Goose The Old Nursery Rhymes
Heinemann, 1913.
First Arthur Rackham edition. Edition de Luxe. Large 4to. Number 344 of 1130 copies printed on hand made paper. Numbered and signed by Arthur Rackham. Publisher's white buckram, with gilt lettering and vignettes. Top edge gilt and other edges untrimmed. 13 tipped in colour plates under captioned tissue guards, one black and white plate of Little Bo Peep is also tipped in. The many line and silhouette drawings are both full page and small vignettes set within the text. A very good copy indeed of this utterly charming book. The white buckram has the usual toning to the spine, and corners are lightly bumped, contents free from any foxing or finger soiling and all plates are perfect.
This book is a very wide selection of nursery rhymes. The frontispiece to this title has a self portrait of the artist in the guise of Jack sprat, though Sprat's wife bears no resemblance to Edyth, Rackham's own wife.
PROVENANCE: From the library of H.C. Drayton, bookplate on pastedown; then library of children's author, Mary Stewart.
