The Allies Fairy Book Introduction by Edmund Gosse
Heinemann, 1916.
First edition. 8vo. Inscribed by Arthur Rackham with an original drawing of a pixie holding a book, "To Mrs Goodheart, with kind regards, from Arthur Rackham, 6.12.16." Blue cloth with gilt titles on the spine and gilt vignettes of winged goblins on the upper cover. Endpapers decorated with line drawings. Twelve colour plates and a host of line drawings in the text. A very good copy, a little dulled to the spine with some light foxing.
This book consists of a collection of fairy tales from each of the Allied nations, including English (Jack the Giant Killer), French (Sleeping Beauty); Russian (Frost); Italian (Cesarino and the Dragon), Serbian (The Golden Appletree) and Japanese (The Foxes Wedding). Although Rackham illustrated another version of the Sleeping Beauty this interpretation is quite different.
