Macmillan, 1921.
Four volumes in six. All first editions. Original publisher's blue cloth decorated in gilt. Top edges gilt. Thirty-five colour plates and a further 69 'supplementary' black and white photographic plates. Eleven loose plans in wallets at the back of the volumes. A further 966 photographic illustrations, line drawings, maps, plans and tables in the text including a number of fold out plans and diagrams. A near fine set with crisp, clean cloth and bright gilt. Faint signs of label removal to some pastedowns and erasures to title pages, but a most attractive, clean set. Housed in two cloth, fleece lined slipcases.
Sir Arthur Evans's monumental account of his unearthing of the palace of Knossos on the Greek island of Crete and the structures and artefacts found within, which lead to his development of the concept of Minoan civilization.
