Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald
Hodder & Stoughton, 1909.
First edition with illustrations by Dulac. 4to. White cloth with gilt lettering and design. In the original publisher's card box. Olive pictorial design to the endpapers. Twenty mounted colour plates under tissue guards, the illustrations are in wonderful rich colours and suit the mood of this verse so well. A near fine copy, bookplate removed from front endpaper and light spotting to the page edges. The box is in very good condition, complete and clean, with just a couple of splits to the corners.
The Rubaiyat was originally translated by Fitzgerald in 1859. The second edition of his translation was published by Macmillan in 1868, and it is the text of the 1868 edition which is used by Hodder and Stoughton in this edition illustrated by Dulac. This copy is the first edition with Dulac illustrations, with "Printed from the Second Edition by Kind Permission of Messrs Macmillan" printed on the verso of the title page as called for.[Edmund Dulac - His Book Illlustrations, A Bibliography.
