A Novel. In Three Volumes. By the author of "Sense and Sensibility," and "Pride and Prejudice."
Mansfield Park: A Novel. In Three Volumes. By the author of "Sense and Sensibility," and "Pride and Prejudice."
Egerton, 1814.
First edition. Three volumes all bound in contemporary maroon half morocco over marbled boards with spines titled and elaborately decorated with gilt. Half titles to vols I and III, but wanting in vol II. A well margined copy measuring 105 x 175 mm. Externally near fine with little wear and no repair to the binding, just a scuff to the marbled paper on the back cover of vol III. Internally very fresh, a stain to p98, a corner chip to I12 taking out catchword and a repaired tear to M2 in vol I and a repaired tear to F1 and some marks to facing pages 184/185 in Vol III. These minor flaws notwithstanding, an unusually well preserved copy in a very handsome contemporary binding.
The author's third novel, written between 1811 and 1813, which quickly found a publisher on the strength of her previous two novels. Despite Egerton's confidence, he only published 1250 copies in the first edition in May 1814. These were sold out by November, and John Murray later "expressed astonishment that so small an edition of such a work should have been sent into the world."
PROVENANCE: Susan Darby (ownership name to each title page; married Rev John Head, Dean of Killaloe, Co. Clare, in 1816); Harriet Head (c.1818-1888; ownership name to each title; daughter of Susan Darby and John Head)
