First edition, deluxe issue, number 49 of only 250 copies, signed and numbered by Arthur Rackham. Large 4to. Full publisher's ivory vellum with gilt lettering and vignettes. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Mounted colour frontis and 50 mounted colour plates at the end, all on brown art paper and under captioned tissue guards. Contents are very clean, with only light spotting to endpapers. A near fine copy, bright and clean, with just a couple of small spots on the upper cover. The original slipcase present, but repaired.
This book was the first of the opulent Christmas Gift books. Its beauty and popularity began the "Golden Age of Book Illustration," in which publishers and illustrators competed to present the most beautiful volumes to the gift market.
