The Colour of Magic
Colin Smythe, 1983.
First edition. Original green cloth lettered in gilt, in pictorial dustwrapper after a design by Alan Smith. The jacket is in the rare uncorrected state without the Smythe's new blurb pasted over. A fine copy in a fine dustwrapper with just a couple of surface scratches to the rear panel. An exceptional copy.
The very rare first edition of the first Discworld novel, published by the obscure imprint of Colin Smythe of Gerrards Cross in an edition of only 506 copies, the majority of which went into public library circulation. Smythe notes, that publication was delayed by a fortnight "to have labels printed to cover the embarrassingly inaccurate blurb written by the US publishers, who printed our copies" (www.colinsmythe.co.uk), but that some copies were sold prior to the new labels being applied. On the anecdotal evidence of copies seen, the number of copies in the uncorrected state (as here) cannot be more than a handful.
The immense popularity of this and subsequent books in the Discworld series, made Pratchett the best selling British author throughout the 1990s, and make this one of the rarest and most sought after of modern books.
