Hickory Dickory Dock
Collins, 1955.
First edition. Red boards in the salmon pink printed dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed by Christie on the front endpaper "To Margaret (alias Clarissa) from Agatha". A fine copy in a very good dustwrapper which is somewhat faded to the spine
A fine presentation copy of this Hercule Poirot novel, inscribed to Margaret Lockwood, the successful actress for whom Christie had written the play Spider's Web the previous year.
Lockwood had made her name as an actress before the war starring on the Hitchock film, The Lady Vanishes. The discussion of playing the lead in a play by Christie came up over lunch with the author at Mirabelle in 1953, during which Lockwood requested that she not play a sinister or wicked part (for which she was well known).
Christie named Lockwood's character, Clarissa, after her mother and the play opened, to great acclaim at the end of 1954, where it ran 774 consecutive performances.
