Described by W.T. Palmer
The English Lakes Described by W.T. Palmer
A & C Black, 1905.
First edition. 4to. The deluxe issue of this delightful book, number 194 of 250 copies signed by Alfred Heaton Cooper. White pictorial buckram with gilt lettering. Top edge gilt and silk page marker present. Seventy five colour plates reproduced from watercolours, each protected by captioned tissue guards. A very good copy, showing some general light wear.
One of the most sought after of the A & C Black deluxe editions. Alfred Heaton Cooper's paintings wonderfully evoke the colours and scenes of the Lake District. Heaton Cooper was a struggling artist when he was approached by A. & C. Black. The commission for this book gave him enough money to open a studio in Grasmere, The Grasmere Gallery, which is still there today, and specializes in the work of Alfred Heaton Cooper and his son William Heaton Cooper. The paintings for this book certainly achieve their aim of providing "a visual description of a particular place."
