Beautifully presented edition of Omar Khayyam's verse. 8vo. Publisher's decorative "antique leather" binding, with gilt decoration. Top edge gilt. In the original publisher's box, with printed label. A beautiful presentation of Khayyam's epic Persian verses, almost fine, with just two small nicks to the front hinge.
Translation by Edward Fitzgerald. A contemporary review of Pogany's illustration for the Ribaiyat celebrates the success of his artwork in expressing Omar's stanzas with drawings that "intelligibly hint at the inner meaning of the verse and yet retain that deep fine but always elusive suggestiveness...You turn the pages and here are the wonderful Eastern dawns, the gorgeous sunsets, bright-dark nights of the Orient burning and gleaming under your eyes, and the ornate mosques, noble palaces, quaint streets, vast deserts, and lovely garden places - the land of Omar's dreams is made visible to you."
