Parsifal Or the Legend of the Holy Grail Retold from Ancient Sources with an Acknowledgement to the Parsifal of Richard Wagner
Harrap, 1912.
First edition. 4to. Grey cloth gilt titles on the upper cover and spine. The upper cover is decorated with an image of a knight on horseback below the glowing light of a golden holy grail. Pictorial endpapers, 16 mounted colour plates and each page of the book decorated either in colour or with decorative borders and line drawings. A very good copy, bright and attractive, with a small nick to rear joint, and a couple of light creases to plates, one with some offsetting from the text opposite.
This book, based on the story of Wagner's opera, is beautifully designed. Hungarian born artist Pogany took charge of the whole book design, from the beautiful covers to the pictorial endpapers and all the illustrations. The calligraphic text is carefully executed, with ornate initials and pictorial backgrounds. The colour illustrations are a mixture of tipped in plates and colour lithographs and they are joined by wonderfully detailed pen and ink drawings.
