Thomas Hitt, then-gardener of Lord Robert Manners' estate in Bloxholme, wrote his treatise on fruit trees with the aim of aiding budding enthusiasts. It became a popular reference work and a valuable insight into 18th century horticultural practices and the third edition was revised and enlarged by Hitt, with more plates incorporated than in the first edition.
