A Christmas greetings card designed by E.H. Shepard for Surrey Home Guard, of which Shepard was a member. Folded cream card printed with a printed line drawing bearing the legend "Christmas Greetings 1944." The card was used by Shepard as his 1944 Christmas greeting, and is inscribed by him, "with best wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year from Ernest Shepard. I married on November 18th, Norah Carroll and shall look forward to your meeting her at the earliest opportunity. We shall be staying on at Long Meadow, I hope. Norah has been a nurse at St. Mary's hospital for 4 years. I hope you are well as are we E.H.S." With printed legend, "C" Company, 4th Guildford Bn. Surrey Home Guard internally. In very good condition.
Shepard joined the Surrey Home Guard 4th Battalion during World War II and served as a captain. His role involved assisting with the drawing of plans for the defence of his home town, Guildford. This 1944 Home Guard Christmas card celebrates the four 'I's of the battalion's motto, 'Individuality, Initiative, Invisibility, Inaudibility'. Sketches of the same man dressed in both military and civilian clothing are captioned by the words, 'Old soldiersÂ…simply fade away.'
PROVENANCE: From the estate of Marie Stopes (1880-1958), pioneer of birth control and friend of Shepard.
