The Expotition to the North Pole
1958.
Two original drawings in pen, watercolour, and coloured pencil, on Whatman artist's board depicting two scenes from a chapter of Winnie the Pooh. 197x195mm and 197x95mm, mounted together and framed for the artist to be exhibited at an exhibition of Shepard's work. Inscribed on the reverse of the smaller drawing, with Shepard's name and address. Also titled in Shepard's hand on the backing board, "Winnie the Pooh - "The Expotition to the North Pole" Ernest H Shepard Woodmancote Lodsworth Sussex". Excellent condition.
'The Expotition to the North Pole' forms chapter 8 of Winnie the Pooh. These drawings are new compositions and were probably drawn for inclusion in The World of Pooh but not used. The preliminary pencil sketches (on a single page laid out as mounted here) are currently held in the V&A and are referred to on p.45 of The Pooh Sketchbook with the note, "This appears to be a preliminary sketch for a later coloured illustration (possibly for The World of Pooh) which was not used". The sign board in the sketch says "No Fishing", which has been replaced with "Divieto di Pesca" in this, presumably for inclusion in an Italian edition (but also apparently not used).
PROVENANCE: Exhibited at F.W.Chapman & Sons, Haslemere, 29 May - 12 June 1965.
