and Other Tales by the Brothers Grimm
Little Brother and Little Sister and Other Tales by the Brothers Grimm
Constable, 1917.
First edition. 4to. Green cloth with gilt lettering and vignettes to upper cover and spine. This copy in the rare pictorial dustwrapper. Endpapers have a purple line drawing of a fairy queen and her elfin helpers. There are 12 colour plates, mounted onto brown art paper, each with a printed caption below and covered by loosely inserted tissue guards. There are also 44 black and white drawings, some full page. A fine copy, slightest spotting to page edges, in a very good example of the dustwrapper, which is complete and attractive, with a closed tear and some light spotting to the upper cover.
A charming version of Grimm's fairy tales accompanied by Rackham's illustrations. Fairy tales include: Snow-white and Rose Red; Thumbling's Travels etc.
Rackham's depiction of Grimm's fairytales, when at the height of his creative powers. Of Little Brother & Little Sister, Fred Gettings claims, "it would be possible to select any single colour picture in order to demonstrate Rackham's art at its finest".
