Introduction by Edmund Gosse
WITH A SIGNED ORIGINAL DRAWING
The Allies Fairy Book Introduction by Edmund Gosse
Heinemann, 1916.
First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt titles on the spine and gilt vignettes of winged goblins on the upper cover. This copy with a full page line drawing on the half title, signed by Arthur Rackham and dated 1918. The drawings depict three different characters and show Rackham's deft use of simple pen strokes to convey great humour. Endpapers decorated with line drawings. Twelve colour plates and a host of line drawings in the text. A very good copy, hinges tender. Housed in a custom made clamshell box.
This book consists of a collection of fairy tales from each of the Allied nations, including English (Jack the Giant Killer), French (Sleeping Beauty); Frost (Russian); Italian (Cesarino and the Dragon), Serbian (The Golden Appletree) and Japanese (The Foxes Wedding). Although Rackham illustrated another version of the Sleeping Beauty this interpretation is quite different.
