First edition. Finely bound in later half tan morocco, red leather title label lettered in gilt on the spine, gilt vignette and decorations. A very good copy indeed, trace of fading to the top edge. Small armorial bookplate "E libris Roberti Comitis de Crewe" (Robert, Earl of Crewe - the British Liberal politician, statesman and writer - 18581945,) on the front pastedown.
The first English translation of one of the four scriptures of Hinduism, the Sama Veda being "second in order, though first in excellence according to the Bhagavad-Gita" and consists of "an arranged series of verses, directed to be sung especially at the Somayaga or moon-plant sacrifice." [Preface]. Sama Veda comes from the Sanskrit and literally means Song and Knowledge.
