First edition. 8vo. Original quarter parchment, ruled gilt, over blue cloth. Inscribed in verse by De La Mare to the director of the Fountain Press, Elbridge Adams, on the front endpaper, "Walter de la Mare for Elbridge Adams with his best wishes... I had a secret laughter / I laughed it near the wall / Only the ivy & the wind / May tell of it at all / February 1929". Frontispiece from a drawing by Richard Doyle. A near fine copy, clean and fresh throughout, though with the usual tanning to the spine.
The author's first book, uncommon inscribed and in such nice condition.
PROVENANCE: The Greenhill - Bradley Martin copy, with the bookplates of Mildred and Harold Greenhill to the front pastedown, and that of Henry Bradley Martin to the cloth chemise.
