INSCRIBED BY ELIOT TO HIS NIECE
The Confidential Clerk
Faber & Faber, 1954.
First edition. Original blue boards lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dustwrapper. Inscribed by Eliot on the front free endpaper to his niece, "For Theodora, from Tom, 18.iii.54". A very good copy indeed.
A fine family association copy. Theodora Eliot, the poet's niece, was the daughter of Marian Cushing Eliot, the favourite of his sisters. On the opening night of The Confidential Clerk at the Edinburgh festival, as biographer Lyndall Gordon recounts, though his two love interests Emily Hale and Mary Trevelyan came to see the play, "he sat with his niece, Theodora, in the royal box."
PROVENANCE: From the library of Theodora Eliot.
