The Confidential Clerk

ELIOT, T. S.

To Marian, from Tom

ELIOT, T. S. The Confidential Clerk

Faber & Faber, 1954.

First edition. Original blue boards lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dustwrapper. Inscribed by Eliot on the front free endpaper to his sister Marian, "To Marian, from Tom, 18.iii.54". A very good copy, with a little staining to the boards, in a very good dustwrapper, toned to the spine with a little edge wear.

A wonderful association copy, a gift from Eliot to his sister, Marian. According to biographer Lyndall Gordon, the "favourite" of the poet's five sisters. "Eliot's parents were both forty-five when he was born and seemed to him remote, like 'ancestors'; he felt closer to his only brother, Henry Ware Eliot, Jr, and to his sister Marian."

PROVENANCE: From the library of Marian Cushing Eliot, and thence by descent.
