Aventures d'alice Au Pays Des Merveilles Traduit de L'Anglais par Henri Bue
Macmillan, 1869.
First French edition of Alice in Wonderland. 8vo. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering and vignettes. All edges gilt. Forty two illustrations by John Tenniel. A very good copy, both rear hinge and joint are slightly worn.
When Alice in Wonderland was published, one of its most ardent admirers was Mrs A Gatty, editor of Aunt Judy's Magazine, an important journal of children's fiction. Mrs Gatty wrote of the book "If you want a good hour's smiling do beg, borrow or steal Alice's Adventures in Wonderland... it makes one feel as if one was asleep in a very fantastical world of animals all topsy-turvy."
