Twelve volumes, all first editions. Each in original pictorial cloth, of different colours as per their title. All elaborately decorated in gilt with gilt page edges. Illustrations are in colour and black and white by H.J. Ford and other illustrators. The colour plates have a very Pre-Raphaelite feel, Ford was a friend of Burne-Jones and his influence is clearly visible. In fine or near fine condition.
A beautiful set. In this series of books Andrew Lang set out to provide the young reader with a varied collection of fairy tales. Some of the tales are very familiar being written by Grimm, Perrault and Hans Andersen, others are less well known, but all have a wonderful charm to them. Stories are gathered from around the world, many of the tales passed down through the generations by word of mouth. Lang hoped that by providing a wide range of interesting tales children would form a love of reading and of books - any child owning this set surely cannot fail to fall under their spell.
