The Little White Horse
University of London Press, 1946.
First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering, in pictorial dustwrapper. Pictorial endpapers with maps of Moonacre (address stamped unobtrusively on front endpaper). Four colour plates and numerous line drawings by Walter C. Hodges. A very good copy indeed of the book, usual fading to the spine and one or two corners lightly turned. In a very good dustwrapper indeed, which is clean and attractive, with just very light wear to the spine ends.
This beautifully written children's story is an enchanting fantasy tale recounting the adventures of Moon Princess, Maria Merryweather. There is a Romeo and Juliet type theme with warring clans the De Noirs and the Merryweathers; mystical appearance of the little white Unicorn and the comic figure of the governess, Miss Heliotrope. The novel was filmed in 2008 as "The Secret of Moonacre".
Published according to war time economy standards the flimsy paper of the dustwrapper mean that the novel is hard to find in attractive condition.
Winner of the Carnegie Medal for children's literature.
