Set in the fictitious central European country of Ruritania, which gives its name to the genre of Ruritanian fiction. This novel has been filmed on numerous occasions, the first as far back as 1915.
The author's letter in response to a favourable review reads, "Dear Shorter...let me say what pleasure your words in the J.L.N. gave me.. yours very truly Anthony H. Hawkins."
