Tarka the Otter His Joyful Water-Life and Death in the Country of the Two Rivers. With an introduction by The Hon. Sir John Fortescue
G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1932.
First illustrated edition. 8vo. Finely bound by Bayntun Riviere for Asprey in full green morocco, with raised bands to spine, gilt ruled border to covers, gilt titles and edges and marbled endpapers. Twenty four full page black and white illustrations by C. F. Tunnicliffe, plus line drawings in the text. A fine copy in a handsome binding.
After reading the book, Tunnicliffe produced four beautiful wood engravings as illustrations and sent them to Putnam's who sent them on to Williamson. The author replied to the publishers that he liked the images, finding them 'specially attractive and true to the spirit of the book'. Putnam's then asked Tunnicliffe to "produce prints that could be cheaply reproduced for a mass-produced book. He soon after provided wood engravings for this purpose that beautifully convey the liveliness of the animals."
