1711.
First edition. 86pp. Bound in later plain wrappers, all edges sprinkled, probably liberated at some stage from a sammelband. Half title and final blank present. A very good copy with a little wear to the wrappers. Half title slightly dusty, but generally fresh.
An scarce political pamphlet by Defoe published in April of 1711, with a second edition following a month later.
The October Club was a rebellious Tory pressure group founded at the end of 1710 to demand the dismissal of all remaining Whigs from the cabinet and the impeachment of Godolphin and Wharton. They were so named for drinking October beer.
"We are plagued here with an October Club; that is set of above a hundred Parliament men of the Country, who drink October beer at home and meet every evening at a tavern near Parliament, to consult affairs, and to drive things on to extremes against the Whigs..." - Jonathan Swift (Journal to Stella, 1711)
