or The House and The Brain
The Haunted and the Haunters or The House and The Brain
Gowans & Gray, 1905.
First edition. 16mo. Original pictorial parchment covered paper wrappers. A very good copy indeed, vellum slightly browned and wavy, with a very small abrasion to the top of the spine, but an unusually well preserved copy of this scarce and fragile booklet.
Originally published in a condensed form in Blackwood's Magazine in 1859, this is the first edition of the full story, and is one of the most celebrated of the Victorian supernatural stories.
"Edward Bulwer-Lytton is probably best known in fantasy for his ghost story, 'The Haunted and the Haunters; or, the House and the Brain', an archetypal Victorian haunted house story - though it is profound in its assessment and investigation of the haunting, and remarkably effective in its creation of atmosphere. Bulwer-Lytton was sensationally popular in his day and had a strong influence on other writers. His occult works, along with those of J. Sheridan Le Fanu, form the basis of modern supernatural fiction." - Clute and Grant (The Encyclopaedia of Fantasy).
