The back-toll'd bells of noisy Camelot
Early Poems of William Morris
Blackie & Son, 1914.
First edition. 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and pre-Raphaelite style decoration. Top edge gilt. Pictorial endpapers, 16 colour plates and many black and white plates and drawings. Housed in its publisher's box, with Harrison designs to upper cover and spine, this copy of the book is in beautiful condition. It's covers are very bright, there is a decorative presentation inscription on the verso endpaper and a little light spotting to the prelims and page edges (a product of life in the original box). The contents are very tight and clean. All in all a very lovely book.
Poems include: The Defence of Guinevere, Rapunzel and Sir Galahad, a Christmas Mystery. The illustrations are a perfect complement to Morris' poems, with rich pre-Raphaelite colours in a distinctive Glasgow style.
