First edition. Original oatmeal cloth titled in gilt in pictorial dustwrapper. Inscribed by Greene to front endpaper, "For Jack & Margaret with lots of love from Graham. March 1951." A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper with some fading to spine and minor wear to the spine ends and corners.

Greene's first collection of literary criticism, in which he looks at particular novels and novelists. Also comprises seven autobiographical essays. Inscribed by Greene to his friend, the author and journalist Margaret Lane, noted biographer of Beatrix Potter and the Brontës, and her second husband, Francis 'Jack' Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon.
