PROVENANCE: Louis Samuel Montagu (bound for him by Riviere). Montagu was the eldest son of Sir Samuel Montagu, first Baron Swaythling, a distinguished foreign exchange banker and prominent Jewish philanthropist. He had an impressive book collection, including an 1865 Alice, which was bound by Riviere in 1899 to match the style of the present binding.
