First edition. 4to. One of only 110 large paper copies. Finely bound by Riviere for L.S. Montagu in 1895. Full brown morocco with gilt ruled borders and leaf decorations to covers and spine, lettered in gilt to spine. Gilt rules and further gilt leaves to turn-ins. Top edge gilt and all others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. One hundred black-and-white line drawings by Charles E. Brock throughout. A very near fine copy, the spine only a little faded, otherwise exceptionally bright and clean. A beautiful copy.
PROVENANCE: Louis Samuel Montagu (bound for him by Riviere). Montagu was the eldest son of Sir Samuel Montagu, first Baron Swaythling, a distinguished foreign exchange banker and prominent Jewish philanthropist. He had an impressive book collection, including an 1865 Alice, which was bound by Riviere in 1899 to match the style of the present binding.
