The Personal History of David Copperfield
The Westminster Press, 1911.
A sumptuous Christmas Gift book. Large 4to. Red cloth, lettered in gilt and black, with gilt and black vignette. Tipped-in colour frontispiece with eighteen further tipped-in colour plates, under captioned tissue guards, plus a coloured illustration on title page, by Reynolds. A near fine copy, the covers bright and clean, one very small closed tear to the spine. A very nice copy.
David Copperfield, described by Dickens as "my favourite child", marks a step change in the author's career, a transition from composer of popular, picaresque, comedies to great novelist. It now ranks as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. This bright copy beautifully illustrates the tale.
